Open-ended questions

-          What will you be doing tomorrow?

Read, do homework, eat.

Read for econ 114 (economics of immigration), econ hw (decisions under uncertainty if, you gets to it), do Japanese homework.

·        How do you remember this? Do you write it down anywhere or use anything to help you remember?

o       Think about it, or write down in your planner (see picture)

o       Red – quizzes, midterms

o       Switch off between pencil and pen – depending on what she has, usually pen

-          Say it’s the beginning of the quarter and all of your professors just gave you the dates of all your midterms. What do you do with this information?

o       Write them down in planner, get all classes, write them down after – probably on Friday

 - How do you remember things like when you have class, your work schedule, homework due dates, meetings for clubs or projects?

o       Commit to memory

o       Print out tritonlink weekly planner, use for first few days of quarter, but just remember it afterwards

 - Do you use anything like daily planners, online planners (Google calendar or TritonLink’s weekly planner), wall calendar, or PDAs to help you plan out your schedule?

o       Just daily planner

·        How often do you refer to your planner each day? Under what circumstance would make you take out your planner?

o       Once or twice a day

o       To write down what she has to do for the rest of the week, or to see what’s coming up

·        Do you find yourself looking at your planner during busier weeks?

o       No, usually just remembers what she has to do

-          Tell me about a time when you had to schedule something with a friend?

o       Spontaneous

o       Schedule to eat with someone

·        How did you and your friend agree on a time?

o       Found a time fits both of your schedule

o       Friend told her the times when she’s not free. She’ll find a time when they’re both free

-         Do you ever go to your TA’s or professor’s office hours?

·        (if yes): Tell me about the last time you decided to go to office hours. How did you decide to go to this particular office hour?

o       Went for econ class – 2 TA’s for that one day, one was better than the other, so went to better one

  •   Are you involved with any clubs or student organizations?
    • Tell me about the last time you coordinated an event with club members.
      • Set up appointments with advisor – had to go to AS office, talk to assistant , picked a day she was free, assistant gave her the time the advisor was free
        • How do you remember club meeting?
          • Memory – 4 times a quarter, every other week starting 3rd week, or she get e-mails (sometimes writes it down in planner)
  • Let's say I invited you to a movie on Saturday at 2PM. What do you do with this information? How do you decide if you will attend?
    • Will decide to go if you’re done with most of your stuff that you planned that day,
      • If not, she won’t go
    • Just remembers it, doesn’t write it down

  • How do you find out about university events? Do you read PEG? Student flyers? ArtPower?  Flyers on library walk, etc?
    • (if yes:) Tell me about the last time you decided to go to an university event?
    • Student flyers or PEG – decides to go if event is interesting, or has something to do with her major, remember by mostly memory
    • If it’s a PEG movie like 2 months later, she’ll probably write it down. But if it’s this week you’ll probably remember it

TritonLink

  • Do you use TritonLink's weekly planner? If so, for what purpose and how do you use it?
    • Do you use the calendar to schedule anything other than classes? (ie. extracurriculars)
    • Do you ever use the bottom part:
      • Yes; Japanese tutoring sections – different than what it says on webreg
        • Only has to go to 1 tutoring session – time is picked by teacher so you don’t know for sure
        • What if you can’t make that session?
          • They have multiple sessions that you pick from
          • Tries to avoid gaps in your schedule to schedule it
          • Pic of tritonlink: highlighted according to econ vs Japanese – but only because she forgot to color code for each class, but usually she would
          • Makes her own table for each class at TA OH’s and puts it in planner

    • What limitations do you meet when scheduling events?
    • Is it easy to use?
      • yes
    • Is there anything you would change about it?
      • Probably not
      • You like the beta class planner thing
        • What do you like about it?
          • B/c you don’t have to write it down, before you had to write it down you classes and then sign up. So it does it for you
  • Do you use TritonLink as a source of information for dates or events? (Academic calendar, events calendar)
    • Academic calendar to see when school starts or ends, holidays, breaks
    • (if yes:) if you could do anything, how would you make this information more accessible or easier to use?
      • “I think it’s fine. Or maybe I’m used to it”
      • Suggestion: have a planner thing for TA’s OH so you don’t have to make your own, because now she goes more often.
      • So far everything is okay

  • Make your own to-do list? (separate piece of paper?)
    • No, writes what you have to do each day on planner
    • If she write on separate piece of paper she would lose it

Artifacts

A page of AH's planner. red = midterm and quizzes, alternates between black and pencil, depending on what AH has

AH shrinks and prints out the TritonLink weekly planner and cuts & pastes it onto a page in her planner. Highlighted according to each subject,

but she says she usually would highlight according to each class.

At the beginning of each quarter, AH makes her own table of all her classes' professor's and TA's office hours (time + location)
